Brief Description of Organisation:

Institute of Oceanology (IO-BAS) was established in 1973 and is affiliated to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The main research activities are focused on coastal dynamics, marine physics, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine biology and ecology and ocean technologies. Traditionally involved in all aspects of marine research, it also offers consulting and expert services, environmental impact assessment studies, education and training. The IO-BAS experts are involved in consulting decision and policy makers for elaboration of environmental friendly regulations and standards for sustainable management of Black Sea living resources at governmental and local authorities’ level. The scientific staffs are qualified in environmental impact assessment expertise. The Institute of Oceanology is hosting National Oceanographic Commission (NOC) and the established Bulgarian National Oceanographic Data Centre (BGODC).

JERICO-NEXT: Main tasks attributed under Work Packages:

Within the Task 1.3 ” Regional/local strategies; identification of scientific specificities, and societal challenges linked to the MSFD, by region/local area and observation systems. Regional network optimization”, IO-BAS will contribute for development of integrated monitoring strategy for the Black Sea with relevant frequency and spatial coverage which would allow a better understanding of the marine environmental changes to construct a relevant MSFD assessment system and to optimize of the existing coastal monitoring system in the Black Sea in respect to needs of multiple societal benefit areas by delivering new knowledge and better evidence.
