Approach to maximise the scientific and societal relevance of the JERICO-RI through integrated innovative monitoring

M1-M4 (Lead: CNRS, Partners: AZTI, COV, PLOCAN, IFREMER, CNR, NIVA, SYKE)

Task 1.2 aims at elaborating a sound scientific and societal approach that will maximize the impact of the JERICO-RI with regards to societal/environmental challenges and subsequent scientific questions of Pan-European and/or regional and local concern, and pertaining to the main mission of the JERICO-RI. Task 1.2 will foster its scientific excellence and its benefits for society by:

I- Developing an Approach for multidisciplinary integrated observations in connection with implementations in IRSs and PSSs (regions, WPs 3 and 4), and through fostering cooperation with providers and users of coastal and shelf seas observations, together with WP2, WP3 and WP4 (Pillars 1 and 3, subtask 1.2.1)

II- Providing challenge-driven observational specifications to be further implemented into sensor-packages (WP7), (Pillar 2,subtask 1.2.2),

III- Addressing regional specificity (user-driven approach) as well as the main environmental and scientific challenges at different scales in multidisciplinary integrated observations, with the aim of increasing the relevance of JERICO-RI for scientific and non- scientific stakeholders (Pillar 4, subtask 1.2.3).

Subtask 1.2.1 – Pillars 1&3:  multidisciplinary integrated observations will be elaborated and consolidated through experiences gained from experimenting in IRSs and PSSs. The first ARW (MS1.1) will be the basis for defining early strategic elements supporting the development and implementation of JERICO-S3 observational and scientific approach. A first synthesis of the JERICO-S3 scientific monitoring approach to address JERICO-RI key missions will be reported in D1.1, partially fed by the early outcomes of WPs 3 and 4 (D3.1 and D4.1). It will encompass the variables to be observed and the sampling frequency to be adopted as a basis of the sensors packages to be developed in WP7. In a later stage, thanks to later ARWs opportunities from enhanced cooperation with other providers and users of marine data (WP2), including recommendations on best practices from WP5 (platform/sensor-based best practices) and feedback after implementations led in WP3 & WP4, the subtask results will be integrated in an overarching monitoring approach for coastal and shelf seas from local to pan-European scales. Results will outcome to D1.4. D1.4 will also report on specification of common products and services answering common key challenges thanks to interaction with PSSs and IRSs.

Subtask 1.2.2 – Pillar 2: Innovative technologies will evaluate the impact of the innovative technologies developed and initially tested in WP7 (JRA) and then hosted for demonstration in IRSs and PSSs. The first ARW (at M1-KOM, MS1.1) will enable establishing a strong interface with WP7. All deployments and tests will then be followed-up throughout the project (through dedicated meetings and at the occasion of ARWs). A synthesis on the experience gained will be provided as part of deliverable D1.4.

Subtask 1.2.3 – Pillar 4: Strengthening the regional dimension will address regional specificities as well as the main environmental and scientific challenges at different scales. The first ARW (MS1.1) will be used to consolidate the early observational and scientific approach applied in IRSs and PSSs (WP3 and WP4). Existing observation actions (including non-JERICO-RI providers of coastal data) will be gathered and analysed. This will be carried out for all regions through joint actions with WP2, WP3 and WP4 (ARWs). A synthesis of identified requirements, gaps and opportunities for each of the regional components will be given in deliverable D1.1 as an initial stage and then in D1.2.
