JERICO-DS: Task 2.3

Task 2.1. Technical and technology outlook for coastal observatories
Task 2.2. Gap analysis of JERICO-RI technologies
Task 2.3. Roadmap for the Technical Design of an operational JERICO-RI
Task 2.4 Preliminary definition of Key Performance Indicators for technological impact

Task 2.3. Roadmap for the Technical Design of an operational JERICO-RI

(M1-M36) (SYKE, IMRNIVA, DELTARES, HCMR, IFREMER &IFREMER-CNRS, All Nations)

The roadmap provides technical design alternatives for JERICO-RI, prioritisation of gap closure, and optimal sequence of required actions. It balances findings and expectations of the technology gap analysis with those from scientific plan (WP1), virtual part of the RI (WP3), plan for sustainability (WP4) and decisions on organisational structures (WP5). Furthermore, the national and regional initiatives, the work of neighbouring RIs and ENVRI community are closely followed to find key elements for synergies, cost-savings and collaborations, and to clarify technology solutions in operational JERICO-RI.

Task 2.3 steers WP2, selects a framework for gap analysis (MS2.1) and streamline collection of national information in WP2, and follows closely JERICO-S3 implementation and organise feedback discussions (MS2.2, 2.4). The creation of the technology roadmap (D2.3) will be an iterative process, and likely several alternative solutions need to be elaborated, and discussed during project workshops (MS2.6). Turnover of technologies are sometimes slow due to investments needed and required changes in traditional practices. Case studies led during JERICO-S3 (WP3, WP4, WP7) will help in developing new synergistic ways of making coastal observations, and developing the technological vision further based on these examples (MS2.7).

Specifically, the roadmap identifies a) how regional observation systems should be technically organised, b) which types of sensors and technologies should be implemented for various tasks, c) how the operational activities should be optimally designed among various platforms, d) which are the most efficient networking schemes between expert communities and technology groups, e) how to optimally support the sustainable operational JERICO-RI through technical expert centres i.e. organisational nodes for specific operations (link to WP5) and f) what are the needs and means for technology knowledge transfer. The technology roadmap will further map out, together with WP5, how the JERICO-label may be implemented to evaluate different technology solutions and practices and to provide a tool to answer which observatories are part of operational JERICO-RI (MS2.6). Another key point considered, together with WP3, is how the technical structures selected may affect data flows and use of e-infrastructures. A third additional key point is how the technical solutions may affect the physical and open access to infrastructures.
